The Settlement

The Settlement Neighborhood Association was formed in March, 2013, in response to concerns about construction and development that was changing the character of the neighborhood. After neighbors failed in an attempt to have the neighborhood designated a Neighborhood Conservation District, we decided to form an official association to continue strengthening neighborhood identity and our sense of community.

The Settlement got its name from the original Irish immigrants who settled in the area between Chestnut and Hill and Fisher Hill in the mid-1800’s. Several of the original, modest cottages still stand. The area took on its present configuration and character beginning in the late 1890’s and up to the pre WWII period. The character remains much as it was in 1940, with its triple deckers, two families, and small single family homes.

The area included in our neighborhood association is: Doran Rd., Eliot Street from #3-127 (between Route 9 and Eliot Playground); Ackers Avenue, Ackers Terrace, Loveland Road, Eliot Crescent, Eliot Avenue, White Avenue, Duffley Court, Timon Avenue and #753-813 Boyslton Street (Route 9 between Eliot St. and Duffley Court, westbound side only.)
